It’s my birthday!

Published 5 months ago • 2 min read

Hey friend!

Today marks my 40th birthday—four incredible decades! It's a bit surreal, as I vividly recall turning 25 not too long ago.

Each year, I take a moment to reflect on my biggest lessons learned. This time, I thought long and hard about the ultimate lesson I'd share, particularly with someone yet to reach 40.

Here's my most significant realization:

When people asked about my "secret" to achieving numerous things in life, I'd often offer what I believed was valuable advice: "There's nothing inherently special about me. I didn't come from a well-resourced family, nor did I have special connections. Basically, I'm capable. But so are you. There's nothing I've learned to do that you couldn't. You can do similar things."

While this advice carries some relatability and inspiration, there's a crucial element I was missing—a revelation that unfolded in the past year.

Yes, most people are capable, armed with untapped potential waiting to be unleashed. But it’s the willingness factor that transforms dormant capabilities into tangible progress.

Willingness, in its essence, is…

  • Starting Before You’re Ready: It’s the audacity to take the initial step even when the full staircase isn’t in view. It’s an acknowledgment that clarity often comes in the midst of action.
  • Confronting Insecurities and Negative Self-Talk: Whether it’s committing to writing a book or venturing into uncharted territories, willingness involves standing firm against the internal voices of doubt and fear.
  • Showing Up Despite Possible Criticism: Being willing means embracing vulnerability, putting your ideas out into the world even if there’s a chance they might face criticism. It’s understanding that growth lies outside the comfort zone.
  • Embracing Change: Willingness is the openness to change, even when it’s uncomfortable or involves stepping into the unknown. It’s the recognition that growth often resides on the outskirts of familiarity. Whether it’s a career shift, a new project, or a personal transformation, being willing means acknowledging that the path to your better self might lead through uncharted territories.

The reality is, no one is going to hand you an awesome life. That's your quest. And it demands work, commitment, and the indispensable ingredient—willingness. But I can say with absolute certainty that your dreams become possible when you are willing.

So I leave you with this question to think about… Are you willing to [fill in the blank]?

Wondering what’s on my birthday wishlist? It’s book reviews and book sales. If you’ve read Don’t Let Fear Have All The Fun, write a sentence or two and leave a review. If you haven’t read it, grab a copy. It’s the perfect beginning of the year read.

Hey friend! Life has a way of throwing unexpected curveballs, doesn't it? For months, I've been eagerly anticipating my move back to my hometown early this summer. But what I didn't anticipate was the mental juggling act required to navigate building a new house while simultaneously selling my current one. With so much to plan for and uncertainty surrounding the completion date of our new home, my productivity and focus have taken a hit lately. It wasn't until fairly recently that I came to...

Hey friend! For a long time, I was caught in the trap of all-or-nothing thinking, believing that if something couldn’t be done perfectly, it wasn’t worth doing at all. Can you relate? Here’s how it played out for me: I wanted to get fit but felt discouraged unless I could commit to a rigorous 5-day-a-week gym routine. I aimed to cut sugar from my diet but thought it pointless unless I eradicated every trace of it in one go. I planned to start investing but held back, believing it wasn’t...

Hey friend! Happy New Year! Is it too late to be saying that? Welcome to my first newsletter of 2024. I'll be honest; despite the promise of a brand-new year filled with possibilities, I feel stuck. I'm so far in my head I'm blocked. And I recognize it for what it is: fear. It's not uncommon for excitement to manifest as fear, especially when there's uncertainty about what lies ahead. Case in point: I have big plans for my personal and professional life this year. And, of course, our friend,...
